According to Trump’s post on Truth Social, Iran will cease its actions first, and Israel will follow 12 hours after, signaling the war’s official end.
Current U.S. President Donald Trump has declared that Israel and Iran have agreed to a “complete and total ceasefire” following 12 days of intense conflict. The truce, as announced on Trump’s Truth Social platform, is to be phased in over a 24-hour period, with Iran halting its military operations first, followed by Israel 12 hours later officially marking the end of the war.
Trump revealed that Iran would initiate the ceasefire, and after 12 hours, Israel would follow suit. He stated that this process would officially bring the war to a close.
The announcement followed a violent escalation between the two nations, during which hundreds were reported killed in Iran and dozens in Israel. Trump said that both sides had committed to remain “peaceful and respectful” throughout the truce implementation.
Despite Trump’s announcement, there was some initial confusion regarding the agreement. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyed Abbas Araghchi, publicly declared that there had been “no agreement” on a ceasefire at that time. However, he later suggested that Iran might halt attacks if Israel stopped its aggression. “As of now, there is NO agreement on any ceasefire or cessation of military operations. However, provided that the Israeli regime stops its illegal aggression against the Iranian people no later than 4 a.m. Tehran time, we have no intention to continue our response afterwards,” Araghchi said.
Even as the ceasefire was expected to begin, explosions were reported in Tehran early Tuesday morning just hours before the truce was to take effect. Simultaneously, Israel’s military confirmed it had intercepted Iranian missiles targeting Israeli territory.
Still, Trump expressed confidence in the durability of the truce, stating, “I think the ceasefire is unlimited. It’s going to go forever.” He went on to praise both nations for their “stamina, courage, and intelligence” in ending a war he believes could have lasted years and devastated the Middle East.
Trump detailed the agreement further on Truth Social:
“It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in-progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED!
“Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World. During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL.
“On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, ‘THE 12 DAY WAR.’”
Global reaction to the announcement has been cautious but somewhat optimistic. Markets responded quickly, with Asian stocks rising and oil prices falling shortly after Trump’s statement.
U.S. Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, also commended Trump’s achievement, calling it a “historic ceasefire agreement” and describing the effort as “herculean,” adding that it deserves the gratitude of people in Israel, Iran, the Middle East, America, and the world at large.
