The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has stated that the Federal Government is open to negotiating the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Speaking with journalists in Lagos on Friday, Umahi emphasized that Kanu’s release should not be used as a bargaining tool for political support from the Southeast region. He cautioned against making Kanu’s freedom a precondition for backing President Bola Tinubu, stressing that such an approach is inappropriate and unfair.
“Somebody asked me about Nnamdi Kanu, and I said his matter is not a condition for the South East to support the President. We are willing to negotiate his release, but no one should make it a condition because the President did not put him there,” Umahi said.
The minister further noted that the process for Kanu’s release would likely involve divine intervention as well as meaningful dialogue with relevant government authorities. He reiterated that while efforts may be underway, they should be pursued through peaceful and proper channels.
“President Tinubu may not be perfect, but he is doing most things right. Look at where he picked up the economy from. The international community has confidence in his reforms. That is why we are getting support for our projects,” Umahi added.
His remarks come amid ongoing calls from various groups and individuals in the Southeast for the release of the IPOB leader, who has been in detention since June 2021.
