On Sunday, President Donald Trump said the U.S. would be supplying Ukraine with Patriot air defense systems to support the country against Russia’s ongoing military assault, amid worsening relations between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need,” Trump announced, without indicating the specific quantity, just weeks after the U.S. declared a pause on certain arms supplies to Kyiv.
“I haven’t agreed on the number yet, but they’re going to have some because they do need protection,” he stated.
Trump said the defense aid will be part of a new agreement involving NATO funding a portion of U.S. weapon shipments to Ukraine.
“We basically are going to send them various pieces of very sophisticated military and they’re going to pay us 100 percent for them,” he told reporters.
Trump reiterated his dissatisfaction with Putin.
When he returned to the presidency in January, Trump had expressed confidence in his ability to negotiate with Putin to end the war, but has grown increasingly displeased as Russian missile strikes continue with no ceasefire agreement.
“Putin really surprised a lot of people. He talks nice and then he bombs everybody in the evening,” Trump said.
U.S. special envoy Keith Kellogg is scheduled to visit Ukraine starting Monday.
Trump also confirmed he will meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Monday, the same day he earlier announced plans for a “major statement… on Russia.”
