Chinese President Xi Jinping, on Wednesday, offered condolences to President Bola Tinubu following the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Speaking on behalf of the Chinese government and its citizens, “Xi expressed deep condolences and extended sincere sympathy to the family of Buhari, and the Nigerian government and people,” according to Chinese news agency Xinhua.
The report noted that Xi referred to Buhari as “a significant leader in Nigeria,” highlighting his dedication to pursuing a development model aligned with Nigeria’s unique circumstances.
He commended Buhari for his efforts in fostering national unity and advancement, as well as his respected position on the global stage.
Buhari was also acknowledged for his consistent efforts in enhancing bilateral relations with China and for playing a key role in advancing broader China-Africa collaboration.
Xi described his death as a major loss for both Nigeria and China, noting that the former Nigerian president was regarded as a trusted friend of the Chinese people.
The Chinese leader also reiterated China’s commitment to strengthening its strategic alliance with Nigeria and expressed optimism for continued collaboration between both nations.
Buhari, who died at the age of 82 on Sunday, served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023.
