Gunmen suspected to be terrorists have killed one Sani Maru and abducted his newly wed bride, along with seven other individuals, in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
According to a resident of Maru town, Ahmad Umar, who spoke to journalists through a telephone interview, the attackers stormed the town on Sunday night and broke into the home of the newly married couple, intending to kidnap both the groom and his wife.
He explained that the assailants made several attempts to drag the groom to their hideout, but he refused to be taken, a decision which Umar said led the gunmen to shoot him in the head, killing him instantly.
“The bandits tried to abduct the groom (Mohammed Sani), but he refused to be abducted. I was listening when they asked him to ride on one of the motorcycles, but he insisted that he would not go with them,” Umar said.
“When the bandits noticed that he was not ready to obey their instructions, one of them shot him, and he died instantly.”
He further disclosed that the bandits abducted the groom’s new wife and seven other people, consisting of four males and three females.
For years, Maru town has been under repeated attacks from bandits, making it one of the local government headquarters worst hit by criminal activities in the state.
It will be recalled that the Divisional Police Officer, Kazeem Raheem, two other police officers, and the Chief Imam of the town, Imam Salisu Sulaiman, were killed by bandits a few months ago.
Many residents have lost their lives, while several others have been abducted in multiple raids. Millions of naira have reportedly been paid in ransom by members of the Maru community. The Emir of Maru, HRH Gado Maigari, also narrowly escaped death when gunmen invaded his palace, firing shots indiscriminately in an attempt to kidnap him.
Efforts to obtain a reaction from the state police command’s spokesman, DSP Yazid Abubakar, were unsuccessful as he could not be reached on the phone at the time of filing this report.
