According to recent figures from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourism has continued its strong rebound after the pandemic, with many destinations setting new records for visitor numbers. Listed below are the top five most visited countries in the world for 2024–2025, based on international tourist arrivals.
1. France – 89.4 million visitors
France remains the world’s top tourist destination, drawing close to 90 million visitors every year. Its lasting popularity comes from its wide variety of attractions, including historic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre Museum, along with its world-famous cuisine, art, and fashion. The country’s advanced tourism infrastructure and regional diversity further enhance its global charm.
2. Spain – 83.7 million visitors
Spain takes second place with over 83 million international arrivals. Its Mediterranean weather, rich cultural heritage, and leisure attractions continue to attract travellers year-round. Popular destinations include Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, and the Balearic Islands. Spain’s focus on sustainable tourism and its large collection of UNESCO World Heritage sites have helped solidify its role as a major global travel destination.
3. United States – 79.3 million visitors
The United States remains one of the most varied destinations, welcoming more than 79 million international tourists. Its appeal lies in its vast range of attractions—from major cities like New York and Los Angeles to national parks, historic sites, and entertainment hubs. The U.S. also benefits from strong tourism marketing and improved travel connectivity following the pandemic.
4. China – 65.7 million visitors
China continues to play a significant role in global tourism, receiving about 66 million international visitors. Its combination of ancient culture and modern progress provides a unique experience for travellers. Iconic landmarks such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and Shanghai’s skyline reflect its blend of tradition and innovation. China’s gradual border reopening and growing investment in tourism infrastructure have further boosted visitor numbers.
5. Italy – 64.5 million visitors
Italy completes the top five list, with roughly 64 million international tourists. Its timeless appeal lies in its art, architecture, and cuisine, with major hotspots like Rome, Venice, Florence, and Milan. Italy’s tourism strength is supported by its rich cultural identity and a well-known sense of hospitality, keeping it among the world’s most visited nations.
The global tourism industry continues its steady expansion, with Europe maintaining its status as the most visited region. UNWTO forecasts suggest that international arrivals will exceed pre-pandemic levels by 2025, driven by improved air travel links, digital visa systems, and growing interest in cultural and experiential tourism.
