A fire outbreak occurred at Ikotun Market in Lagos on New Year Day, allegedly sparked by firecrackers, around 12:05 am on January 1, 2026.
Eyewitnesses said the blaze started in the early hours as traders and residents celebrated the arrival of the new year, sending shoppers and stall owners into panic. Flames reportedly spread quickly through several sections of the market, destroying goods and property before emergency responders could contain the situation.
Local fire officials confirmed that the fire was brought under control within hours, but damages were extensive. No casualties have been reported so far, although several traders are said to have suffered losses of merchandise worth millions of naira.
Authorities have urged residents to exercise caution during celebrations, particularly with firecrackers, and announced that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with New Year celebrations and the importance of safety measures in crowded market areas.
