The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has urged students nationwide to make positive use of cyberspace for personal advancement and national progress.
He made the appeal at the maiden edition of the Digital Festival of the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Speaking on the topic, “Proper Use of the Cyber World for Gain Getting”, the EFCC chairman, represented by the Head of the Cybercrime Section, Chief Superintendent of the EFCC, CSE Ibrahim Musa, encouraged students to view the internet as a tool for creativity, education, and legitimate business, rather than for cybercrime.
“This is your time and you must utilise it well. There is much in the cyber world, and you must make good use of it. Unfortunately, instead of embracing it positively, some are applying it in the wrong way,” he said.
Olukoyede also highlighted the opportunities in digital assets such as bitcoin, urging students to focus on their legitimate uses, while warning against fraud and illegal online practices. He lamented that the prevalence of cybercrime has damaged Nigeria’s reputation globally, despite its status as the Giant of Africa.
“When you are an ex-convict, it will restrict you from travelling abroad. You must learn to use the digital space productively. Avoid peer pressure. No nation can advance without its youth,” he warned.
He further stressed the dangers of cybercrime as outlined in the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act (AFF Act), noting that violations come with serious legal and social consequences.
Also addressing participants, Jonah Emmanuel, Director of Excellence Academy, Business & Innovative Professional, encouraged students to harness the internet to market ideas, create solutions, and earn legal income. “People like you can share information through digital channels, offer solutions online, and make legitimate money,” he said.
The event brought together technology professionals and business innovators to inspire students towards constructive participation in the digital sphere.
