FG Cancels Independence Day Anniversary Parade

The Nigerian FG has declared the cancellation of the Independence Day parade earlier planned for Wednesday, October 1, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

In a statement released on Monday, September 29, 2025, by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Segun Imohiosen, the government clarified that although the parade would no longer hold, other events scheduled for the celebration will still take place as arranged.

“The Federal Government wishes to announce the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade, previously scheduled to mark the 65th Independence on Wednesday, 1st October,” the statement read.

However, the government stressed that the decision should not be interpreted as reducing the importance of the nation’s landmark celebration.

“The cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary, and the government remains committed to celebrating Nigeria’s 65th year of independence with dignity and enthusiasm.”

According to the announcement, citizens should still anticipate the other activities already prepared for the commemoration.

“Accordingly, all other programmes slated for the Independence Anniversary will remain in effect.”

Imohiosen explained that the choice to cancel the parade was not an easy one, admitting the disappointment it might cause to those who had been looking forward to it.

“The Government deeply regrets any inconvenience caused by this cancellation.”

The statement also conveyed gratitude to Nigerians and the diplomatic corps for their continued support, while urging citizens to stand behind the administration’s policies and reforms.

“The Federal Government appreciates the understanding, support and cooperation of all Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests, and urges Nigerians to support the reforms of President Bola Tinubu in making Nigeria a greater nation.”

No official reason was given for the cancellation of the parade, which is traditionally known for showcasing military hardware, cultural displays, and patriotic performances at Eagle Square in Abuja.

For years, the parade has been one of the symbolic highlights of Independence Day celebrations, attracting Nigerians, dignitaries, and foreign observers.

Earlier, SaharaReporters noted that the Federal Government declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

Nigeria gained its independence in 1960 from Britain, an event that marked the beginning of self-governance and the pursuit of unity, prosperity, and democracy.

The declaration of the holiday was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed and issued on Monday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

The announcement reaffirmed the government’s acknowledgment of the value of Independence Day, which stands as a symbol of freedom, resilience, and the shared aspirations of Nigerians across different generations.

The minister also extended good wishes for a memorable 2025 Independence Day celebration.

He pointed out that the day should not be solely about celebrations but also about sober reflection on the sacrifices made by past leaders and citizens who secured the nation’s freedom from colonial rule.

According to the statement, Tunji-Ojo urged “Nigerians to further keep faith in the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which is anchored on national rebirth, economic transformation, and collective prosperity.”

He further highlighted that the Nigerian government remains dedicated to implementing policies and initiatives that will encourage inclusivity, revive the economy, and promote social justice.
