Football Star Diogo Jota and Brother Die in Tragic Car Crash

Liverpool star Diogo Jota has died at the age of 28 after his Lamborghini veered off the road in northern Spain – just two weeks after marrying his childhood sweetheart.

The Portuguese forward was in the supercar with his younger brother and fellow footballer Andre, 26, who also lost his life in the crash.

It is believed the Lamborghini’s tyre blew out while overtaking on the A-52 at Cernadilla near Zamora in northwestern Spain, close to the Portuguese border, shortly before 1am today.

The supercar left the road, flipped, and caught fire in the early hours of the morning. Emergency services responded, but the brothers could not be saved.

Liverpool FC released a statement saying the club is ‘devastated’ by the tragedy, noting that Diogo’s family, friends and fans have suffered an ‘unimaginable loss’.

Jota had recently wed Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children and his partner since he was 16. He had called himself the luckiest man in the world to be her husband, sharing emotional footage from their wedding in his final Instagram post on Wednesday afternoon.

The couple married on June 22 in Porto, the footballer’s hometown. Rute posted more wedding pictures on social media yesterday, writing: ‘My dream come true.’ Jota replied in the comments: ‘I’m the lucky one.’

The Lamborghini crash took place on the A-52 in the Zamora province. The road is a major route for drivers leaving northern Portugal, heading to the ports of Santander and Bilbao, or travelling northeast toward France.

Authorities in the Castilla and Leon region confirmed the crash and the two fatalities around 12.35am on Thursday. The Portuguese Football Federation later confirmed the deaths of Diogo and Andre.
