The Lagos State Government has confirmed that the death toll from the fire outbreak at the 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance, GNI, House on Lagos Island has risen to six.
The update came after the recovery of an additional body from the rubble on the eighth day of continuous search and rescue operations at the location.
In a statement posted late Wednesday on X, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, said the latest discovery brought the number of confirmed deaths to six.
He also disclosed that 13 people sustained various injuries during the incident.
According to him, eight males, including a firefighter, were taken to hospital for further treatment, while five others, three men and two women, suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene before being discharged.
Giving more details, Omotoso said one adult female was recovered dead from the collapsed portion of the building and later released to her husband.
He added that two adult males were also pulled out of the debris, while three victims were burnt beyond recognition.
WIZOPA recalls that the fire started on December 24 on the fourth floor of the high-rise building and quickly spread to other parts, causing extensive damage.
The blaze destroyed goods worth millions of naira and forced many traders operating in the building to abandon their businesses.
Emergency officials have continued recovery operations, while investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing.
