Peter Rufai, Legendary Super Eagles Goalkeeper, Dies at 61

The Super Eagles have paid a heartfelt tribute to former Nigerian goalkeeper and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations champion, Peter Rufai, following the sad news of his passing.

In a statement shared on Thursday via X, the national team honored Rufai fondly remembered as “Dodo Mayana”—describing him as a towering figure in Nigerian football history whose impact will never be forgotten.

“Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion,” the statement read.

The message went on to celebrate Rufai’s enduring legacy, applauding his goalkeeping heroics and the influence he had both on and off the pitch.

“Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai,” it added.

Rufai was a key part of the iconic Nigerian team that lifted the 1994 AFCON trophy and secured the country’s historic first appearance at the FIFA World Cup that same year.

Recall that Wizopa Earlier reported the tragic loss of Liverpool Star Diogo Jota who died today at a car crash accident alongside his younger brother.
