Nollywood Actor Kunle Remi Sparks Reactions After Linking Lagos Floods to Nigerians’ ‘Dirtiness’

Popular Nollywood actor, Kunle Remi, has sparked reactions after blaming the recurring flooding in Lagos on what he described as the “dirtiness” of Nigerians.

In a video shared on his Instagram story on Monday, the actor, who is known for featuring in several successful Nollywood productions, expressed his frustration over the recent heavy rainfall that caused flooding across different parts of Lagos State.

“Let us call a spade a spade, We are a dirty people. Nigerians are dirty people and that’s why there is flood everywhere,” Remi stated in the clip.

The actor explained that the flooding situation has continued to worsen, adding that it is no longer limited to certain areas of Lagos Island as several communities on the mainland are now experiencing similar challenges.

“I saw in the news Gbagada is flooded, even Ilupeju… My friend i do not even know if he is eating well or if he is alive he has been stuck in Agungi.”

Remi stressed the need for Nigerians to improve their waste disposal habits, noting that improper disposal of refuse often blocks drainage channels and contributes to repeated flooding during heavy rainfall.

The video, which was widely shared across social media platforms including X, generated mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some users supported his position and agreed that poor sanitation habits contribute to flooding, others criticised the actor for placing too much emphasis on citizens’ behaviour while overlooking other major factors such as poor infrastructure, drainage systems and government responsibility.

Reacting to the video reshared by popular blog Instablog9ja, user #_Temmyyyyy wrote, “This is so true, 80% of Lagos is so dirty and smelly, both the island and mainland whether it’s rainy or not. I don’t think it was as bad as this when Fasola was governor.”

Another user, #OluwatobiTofun1, noted, “Kunle Remi’s comments have sparked debate, with many agreeing that indiscriminate waste disposal contributes to blocked drainage systems and worsening floods. Others argue that while public behaviour plays a role, stronger urban planning, proper drainage infrastructure, and effective waste management are equally essential to tackling flooding in Lagos.”

However, some Nigerians disagreed with the actor’s statement. #Son_Of_Grace12 countered, “So dirtiness makes everywhere dey flood? Be like dis one no get sense is there any proper drainage system?”

Kunle Remi has previously used his platform to speak on social issues affecting Nigerians. His latest comments came amid reports of severe flooding in several Lagos communities following days of heavy rainfall, leaving residents displaced and causing damage to properties.

As discussions continue, many Nigerians are calling on government authorities to intensify efforts in clearing blocked drainages, improving flood control measures and enforcing sanitation regulations, while citizens are also being urged to reflect on personal habits that may contribute to environmental challenges.
