Veteran Nollywood actor Olu Jacobs has died at the age of 84.
Olu Jacobs, whose full name was Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. His family announced his passing on social media, with his son, Olusoji Jacobs, sharing the family’s statement. His wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, also shared the announcement with the public.
The family said they were announcing his passing with gratitude for “a life well lived and fought,” while referring to the veteran actor as “The Lion of Lufodo.”
They also appealed to bloggers, social media influencers and members of the public to respect the family’s privacy during the period of mourning.
The death of Olu Jacobs marks the passing of one of the most recognisable figures in Nigeria’s film industry, whose career spanned several decades and included work both in Nigeria and abroad.
Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs celebrated his 84th birthday just over two months before his death. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before beginning his acting career in Britain.
During his early career, Jacobs appeared in theatre productions, British television programmes and international films. He later returned to Nigeria, where he established himself as one of the country’s most respected and recognisable veteran actors.
Throughout his career, he became widely known for his memorable performances and significant contribution to the growth of Nigeria’s film industry.
His passing comes as a major loss to Nollywood, with the veteran actor leaving behind a long-standing legacy in Nigerian entertainment.
